This book is about sustainability transitions in the ready-made garment sector in Bangladesh. It offers a detailed analysis of garment manufacturers’ responses to environmental and social pressures. The discussion also examines why attempts to improve sustainability are often hindered by limited firm capabilities and institutional deficiencies. The book begins by discussing the development of the garment industry in Bangladesh and the sustainability issues it faces. It then looks at how firms respond to these challenges, the factors that influence their decisions, and the roles played by government, industry associations and other key supporting institutions. The book ends by proposing targeted pathways for action. The book makes the case for a broader understanding of sustainability that goes beyond meeting international standards or introducing new technologies. It offers a new perspective on how deeply embedded industrial systems can move from compliance-driven responses towards transformative change.
