Understanding Cyber Safety and Security of Children
This book is set in the context of existing and future online threats that make children vulnerable. It explores the approaches used to assess the training needs and map out strategies to enhance their awareness and knowledge of cyber safety and security. This book records the critical roles that stakeholders like parents, guardians and school administrators play in keeping children safe. It captures the current level of knowledge about cyber safety and security from an extensive survey-based analysis.
This book suggests parents and guardians, too, need to be educated on the potential pitfalls and dangers to ensure that their kids are appropriately advised, protected, and safeguarded from the ill effects of technology. It investigates how parents and guardians ideate about cybercrime and cyberspace and how their perception of the impending dangers are passed on to their children. This book explores the information asymmetry between parents and children, especially in setting priorities for the practices they adopt in cyberspace.
This book also captures the general behaviour of teachers and school authorities towards the usage of the internet and safe online practices that they tend to follow. It investigates and maps the approaches and endeavours to measure their current level of awareness and knowledge vis-à-vis the steps taken to enhance and expand their contribution towards a safe online environment for children.
In a nutshell, this book measures perceived knowledge, awareness level, and the importance of cyber safety and security measures that all stakeholders should undertake. Based on the findings of an empirical study alongside the use of the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) and the technology acceptance model (TAM), this book lays down the necessary framework to be implemented to facilitate a safe and secure cyberspace for children. It enlists policy guidelines, recommendations and best practices that are crucial for administrators and authorities to follow.
Monica Sahni is Founder & CEO of the Sumona Institute of Computational Expertise and former Vice Principal (Academics) at Delhi Public School (DPS), Mathura Road, New Delhi, India. She spent 32 years at DPS, where she also served as Head of the Computer Science Department. Dr. Sahni completed her bachelor’s degree in computer mathematics from Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada, followed by a master’s degree in mathematics from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi. She subsequently earned a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s degree in computer science. She also holds a PhD from Jindal Global Law School, O.P. Jindal Global University, Sonipat, India, where her research focused on cyber safety and security. Her doctoral research explored cyber safety and security knowledge and awareness among students, parents, teachers and school authorities, while emphasising the collective responsibility of all stakeholders in creating a safe and secure digital environment for children. With more than three decades of experience in education and technology, Dr. Sahni has worked extensively in cyber safety and security. She has conducted numerous teacher-training programmes across India, the Asia-Pacific region and Europe. As an In-Class Instructor with Oracle Academy, USA, from 2006 to 2010, she trained teachers in Database Design and SQL and Programming in PL/SQL.
Indranath Gupta is Dean, School of Law, SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), Chennai, India. Formerly, Professor at the Jindal Global Law School and Dean in the Office of Data, Innovation and Technology at O.P. Jindal Global University, India, he was also the Director of Jindal Initiative on Research in IP and Competition (JIRICO), and a Senior Fellow at the Jindal Institute of Behavioural Sciences (JIBS). He held the Jean-Monnet Chair- Academic Coordinator for the project ‘Multi-dimensional Approaches to the Understanding of the E.U. Data Protection Framework’ [2020-23]. He has also been invited as a Jean Monnet Visiting Research Fellow at the Centre of Excellence, Jean Monnet Centre for Intellectual Property & Management, Bournemouth University, UK. Prof. Gupta was earlier appointed as the research collaborator by the Università Bocconi, Milan, Italy, for a project funded by the European Commission under the 7th Framework Programme. He participated in a multi-jurisdictional project on Digital Era Competition: A BRICS View, whose report was published by the BRICS Competition Law and Policy Centre. Holding two LL.M. degrees (taught and research) from the University of Aberdeen, UK, and the University of East Anglia, UK, and a PhD from Brunel University, London, Prof. Gupta specialises in technology law and aspects of IP law. His work has been published in journals such as the International Data Privacy Law, International Journal of Law and Management, European Intellectual Property Review, Journal of World Intellectual Property, International Journal of Law and Information Technology, Journal of Intellectual Property Law & Practice, Journal of Data Protection and Privacy, Economic and Political Weekly, and European Journal for Law and Technology. He is the Editor in Chief of the Major Reference Work titled ‘Handbook on Originality in Copyright: Cases and Materials’, currently available as a Living Edition on SpringerLink.
Krishan Kumar Pandey is the dean of the Office of Doctoral Studies (ODS) and a professor at Jindal Global Business School (JGBS) at O.P. Jindal Global University, Sonipat, India. Dr. Pandey holds a master's and doctorate in statistics along with twenty-two years of research and teaching experience. His research interest includes cyber security, renewable energy, sustainable development, net zero, and circular economy. He has written four books and two book chapters, guided 15 Ph.D. scholars, and published 50+ research papers in various areas of his research interest. He is also acting as an editorial board member and reviewer for various internationally reputed journals, having a high impact factor.
